Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Town of Shenandoah’s new ADA Trail took place at Big Gem Park in Shenandoah on Saturday May 6, 2023 at 10 am. 

Speaking at the ceremony was Parks and Recreation Chairman Russell Comer, Jr., Town Manager Juanita Roudabush and Page County Commissioner of the Revenue Rebecca “Becky” Smith.

The Town of Shenandoah ADA Nature Trail was one of four projects awarded Trail Access Grants from Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) in December 2021. The DCR awarded $151,513 in grants for four trail projects under a new program designed to increase access to trail opportunities for people with disabilities. Former Museum Curator Joyce Fluharty wrote Shenandoah’s grant package that was awarded by DCR.

Pettit Paving won the bid and completed paving the trail, two handicapped parking spaces and ramp up to picnic pavilion on April 18, 2023.

The paved trail is about one quarter of a mile long and includes two park benches with plans to install two more benches in the near future.

Those that attended the ceremony were: Vice Mayor William L. Kite, Councilman Richard G. Pierce, Councilman Russell Comer, Jr., Town Manager Juanita Roudabush, Museum Curator Lora Jenkins, former Councilman Charlie Jenkins, retired Shenandoah Museum Curator Joyce Fluharty, Tim Bailey Branch Manager at Blue Ridge Bank at Shenandoah Branch, Page County Commissioner of the Revenue Rebecca “Becky” Smith, Charlie Hall, town residents Bob and Sue Zirkle, Jaxon Staples and William Davis. Also present was Randy Arrington publisher for Page Valley News and Amos Thomas with Shenandoah Newz. Big Gem Park is located at 736 Fourth Street in Shenandoah Va 22849.
