The town of Shenandoah holds its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Big Gem Park. Everyone gathers under the gazebo to sing Christmas carols, led by members of the local churches. Afterwards, names are read for the in honor & in memory of bows that decorate the split rail fence in the park. There is a big bond fire next to the pond where hot dogs and marshmallows is roasted. Volunteers from the Shenandoah Indians organization are on hand to hand out hot chocolate. Santa arrives atop a fire truck driven by volunteers from the Shenandoah Volunteer Fire Department. Santa takes his place at the seat of honor under the gazebo and the children of the community get their picture taken with Santa. Santa gives each child a toy after they tell him what they want for Christmas.
