1:00 p.m. Guest Speaker at the Town of Shenandoah Museum:  Robert Moore II 507 First Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849.  A native of Page County, Robert Moore is perhaps best known locally for his long-running Heritage & Heraldry column (1997-2010) for the Page News & Courier and published works about Page County, to include Tragedy in the Shenandoah Valley. Since 2019, he has embarked on a study of ancestry as interpreted through DNA, and most especially Y DNA. He is currently administrator and co-administrator of several online Y DNA projects, and travels annually to sites in Europe pursuing the backstory to findings in ancient DNA.  Mr. Moore’s topic will be Tragedy in the Shenandoah: The Summers-Koontz Execution.

April 20-Shenandoah

Discovery Hike 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Big Gem Park (736 Fourth Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849).  Join retired Shenandoah National Park Ranger-Naturalist Mara Meisel on the 1-mile loop Clinton Lucas, Jr Trail to see what flora and fauna are located on the trail.  Wear sturdy shoes as the trail is rocky and uneven with an elevation gain of about 100 feet.  Bring binoculars, sunscreen, and bug spray.  No pets please.

10:30 a.m. Free Community Service Program “Get Your Ducks in a Row” at the Town of Shenandoah Museum 507 First Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849.   The phrase, “get your ducks in a row,” means being or becoming organized.  The best gift you can leave your loved ones is an organized estate at your journey's end.  Mary Ann Stripling helps you to get your “Ducks in a Row.”  Many years of professional experience as both a teacher and a counselor have given Mary Ann the practical skills needed for helping people get their affairs in order, while personal experience has given her an understanding for the importance of leaving your “Ducks in a Row.”  Although the topic is serious, Mary Ann’s approach is lighthearted, productive, and fun!

Mary Ann Stripling has a Ph.D. in Family Studies from Virginia Tech, an M.Ed. in Counselor Education from the University of Virginia, and a B.A. in English from Texas Tech. Mary Ann has been a high school teacher, a high school head counselor, and an assistant professor of Counselor Education at Eastern Mennonite University. The program is sponsored by the Shenandoah River Chapter DAR.

Charlottesville, VA band An Lár captivates audiences with the traditional music of Ireland, intricate instrumentals including blasts of reels, loping jigs, peppy sailor’s hornpipes, lyrical waltzes and haunting laments alternating with songs of love, sorrow and celebration. Burn Ban in effect.  The 4 PM Burning Law bans open-air burning prior to 4:00 p.m. Burning is allowed between 4:00 p.m. and midnight as long as the burner takes proper precautions and attends the fire at all times.  Violation of the 4 PM Burning Law is a Class 3 misdemeanor with a fine of not more than $500.

February 15-Shenandoah

7:00 p.m. Local History Virtual Program at the Town of Shenandoah Museum 507 First Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849.   There will be a virtual program via a Zoom link provided by the Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project.  Dr. Jennifer Blair, University of Ottawa, will share her research discovered while studying the letters of Bethany Veney, an enslaved woman in Page County.  Bethany Veney dictated her life story in 1889 which became a published book:  The Narrative of Bethany Veney, a Slave Woman.

2:00 p.m.-2:45 p.m. Storytelling with Susan Clark at the Town of Shenandoah Museum 507 First Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849. Susan Clark specializes in tales from the Appalachian Mountain regions and Native American traditions as well as many other cultures.  She brings life to her characters through body, voice and facial expression enhanced with her experiences of stage acting and a long career as children’s librarian in public and school libraries. She tells stories for various holidays and occasions to child and adult audiences in many settings. Susan has been spinning yarns and telling tales on herself for over 40 years and lives in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

2:00 p.m. Local History Program from Nancy Beatty of the Daughter of the American Revolution Shenandoah River Chapter about St Peter Lutheran Church at the Town of Shenandoah Museum and Welcome Center (507 First Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849).  Did you know St Peter Lutheran Church is the second oldest continuous Lutheran congregation in Virginia?  The members of the Shenandoah River Chapter will also be presenting a storyboard containing the history of St Peter Lutheran Church to be hung in the Town of Shenandoah Museum and Welcome Center.  Come out and learn local history.

3:00 p.m. -4:00 p.m. Live Music Featuring Austin Shifflett at the Town of Shenandoah Museum and Welcome Center (507 First Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849).  Based in the Shenandoah Valley, Austin plays a lively mix of Americana roots music on guitar and harmonica.  He has a special penchant for the eclectic musical styles that emerged from the southern musicians and songsters of the 1920s and 1930s.  His aim is to bring greater awareness and appreciation of the original artists while offering fresh interpretations of this music to his audience.  You can catch him playing around the Shenandoah Valley at various venues.

Pinocchio is little wooden marionette that is lovingly created by a master craftsman ... but what a bad little puppet he turns out to be! He's selfish and greedy and he lies. He doesn't listen to the good counsel of anyone, including his father Geppetto, a philosopher Cricket, or the Blue Fairy. After many hair-raising adventures, Pinocchio finally learns what it takes to become human: kindness, compassion, loyalty, hard work and selflessness. The whole family will enjoy this heart-warming traditional tale!

 

December 2-Shenandoah

The Town of Shenandoah and PACA are teaming up to host the Shenandoah River Park Reindeer Run on December 2nd from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Participants can look forward to a 2-mile run within the Shenandoah River Park (315 Morrison Road, Shenandoah, VA 22849.  Registration for the Reindeer Run is open at $20 per participant, and each registered runner will receive an exclusive event hat. This event will be a great experience for all involved, blending fitness, community spirit, and the holiday season.  Holiday themed costumes are welcome!

11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Mo Willem’s Elephant and Piggie at the Shenandoah Community Library 418 S Third Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849.  Elephant and Piggie is a book series for early readers created by Mo Willems. The series, which debuted in 2007 with two books, is done in a comic book style, and features two friends: an elephant named Gerald, and a pig named Piggie.

Discovery Hike 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Big Gem Park (736 Fourth Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849).  Join retired Shenandoah National Park Ranger-Naturalist Mara Meisel on the 1 mile loop Clinton Lucas, Jr Trail to see what flora and fauna are located on the trail.  Wear sturdy shoes as the trail is rocky and uneven with an elevation gain of about 100 feet.  Bring binoculars, sunscreen, and bug spray.  No pets please.

1:30 p.m.-2:15 p.m. Ghost Stories with Susan Clark at the Town of Shenandoah Museum 507 First Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849.  Susan Clark has been telling stories and teaching people to tell stories for more than 30 years through her career as children’s librarian and continuing into her retirement. Her favorite tales come from the Appalachian Mountain regions and Native American traditions.  She is most well known for her ghost tales which she shares at libraries and campgrounds around the state. Using voice inflection and body movement, Susan weaves a story that brings a thrill of suspense and a shiver or two to all who listen, the scarier the better!  Intended for ages 7 and up.

Town of Shenandoah will be hosting a Halloween Costume Parade at Shenandoah River Park 315 Morrison Road, Shenandoah, VA 22849 at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31st.   The costume parade begins at 4:30 p.m.  Bring your bikes, wagons, and strollers for the parade or you can walk.  There will be free food, drinks, and candy while supplies last.  Milnes Chapter No. 3 Order of the Eastern Star is this year’s co-sponsor and will provide the food.  Poppy’s Coffee Camper will provide hot chocolate and poppy cakes.  There will also be a Fall scene for pictures.  For more information call Event Coordinator Lora Jenkins (540) 652-8773.   Trick-or-treating will be observed on Tuesday, October 31st throughout the Town of Shenandoah with a curfew of 10:00 p.m.

Janney talk is titled Going Home:  Disbanding the Remnants of Lee’s Army in the Shenandoah Valley.  Caroline E. Janney is the John L. Nau III Professor of the American Civil War and Director of the John L. Nau Center for Civil War History at the University of Virginia.  A native of Luray and graduate of the University of Virginia, she worked as a historian for the National Park Service and taught at Purdue University before returning to UVA in 2018.  An active public lecturer, she has given presentations at locations across the globe.  She has published seven books.

Town of Shenandoah will be hosting a Halloween Costume Parade at Shenandoah River Park 315 Morrison Road, Shenandoah, VA 22849 at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 31st.   At 4:15 p.m. Massanutten Regional Library will have a story time.  The costume parade begins at 4:30 p.m.  Bring your bikes, wagons, and strollers for the parade or you can walk.  After the parade there will be free hot dogs, drinks, and candy while supplies last.  The Little Red Snack Shack will be selling food and giving out free hotdogs, and Poppy’s Coffee Camper will be selling coffee and will have hot chocolate.  There will also be a Fall scene for pictures.  For more information call Town Hall (540) 652-8164.   Trick-or-treating will be observed on Monday, October 31st with a curfew of 10:00 p.m.

Discovery Hike 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Big Gem Park (736 Fourth Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849).  Join retired Shenandoah National Park Ranger-Naturalist Mara Meisel on the 1 mile loop Clinton Lucas, Jr Trail to see what flora and fauna are located on the trail.  Wear sturdy shoes as the trail is rocky and uneven with an elevation gain of about 100 feet.  Bring binoculars, sunscreen, and bug spray.  No pets please.
