Last week we were driving along First Street in the Town of Shenandoah, when we observed that two very old maple trees had been cut down at 416 First Street.

From the diameter of the tree trunks, the trees had been there for a very long time. From old pictures of parades on First Street, the trees were there in the 1950’s. We are sure they were there when Dr B.C. Shuler had his doctor’s office there.  Dr Benjamin Clinton Shuler started his practice in Shenandoah in 1903. He bought the old Ropp building and remodeled it into a house with his office’s downstairs and rooms upstairs. According to online records, this house was built in 1928.  Dr. Shuler was honored in 1953 for fifty years in the practice of medicine at “Dr. Shuler Day” held at Shenandoah Memorial Stadium on Junior Avenue.

Dr Shuler lived in Shenandoah at 403 Fourth Street, on the corner of Virginia Avenue and Fourth Street (Highway 340).

The Shenandoah Town Hall was located in this house during the 1980’s before moving into the old Sovran Bank building at 426 First Street in December 1986.
