Lets get this straight. Tennis in Page County is new and very few people know how to play. The Page Valley Community Tennis Association (PVCTA), which serves Elkton to Luray, has been working on changing that. Free tennis clinics and leagues have played a major role in growing tennis in our county. Being a member of the PVCTA is low cost and all the proceeds goes back into growing tennis in our area. Some of the accomplishments lately have been the Summer Slam Tennis Tournament which welcomes players of all skill levels to play other players with similar skill as well as bringing in some of the top competition in our area to play in the "Open" division, a haunted trail full of ghosts and goblins called the Terror Trail makes use of Big Gem Park after the sun has set, leagues that allow anyone and everyone to have fun while getting some great fitness and even assisting in forming a girl's tennis team at Page County High School.
PVCTA efforts in this area has impressed many including the United States Tennis Association (USTA). The USTA was proud to name PVCTA with the 2011 Community Tennis Association of the Year award for Virginia. Also receiving a special award on the night was local Page News and Courier sportswriter, Bill Meade, for his participation with the PVCTA and a absolutely great article he wrote on the newly created girl's tennis team at Page County High School.
On hand at the tennis awards ceremony was tennis legend and guest speaker, Roy Emerson, who spoke from the heart in a interesting and entertaining speech about tennis over the years seen through his eyes. Click here to see all the award winners.
