This past Memorial Day weekend it was a very emotional time in our community. We were morning those that gave all for their country- Army Captain Andrew Ross, the loss of our community leader Dave Hinkle and the recent closing of our hometown grocery store.
At the scouts Flag retirement ceremony on Friday evening, Scout Master Phil Secrist mentioned our community would greatly miss our councilman and community leader Dave Hinkle and we will also miss seeing Mike and Larry Sullivan in their grocery store that they ran for 40 years.
At Saturday’s Memorial Day Ceremony at the Shenandoah VFW, Mayor Lucas told everyone of the passing of Army Captain Andrew Patrick Ross, and how he gave all for his country when he was one of three servicemen killed in Andar, Ghazni Province Afghanistan when their vehicle was hit with an improvised explosive device. During the ceremony Mayor Lucas praised Mr. Hinkle as a great Councilman and community leader and was the coordinator for our annual Memorial Day Festival and Parade for over 20+ years.
At Shenandoah’s Historic Stevens Cottage Mayor Lucas presented to Mr Hinkle’s daughter Lori Barth A Resolution of Respect, adopted May 14, 2019 & A plaque of appreciation for all of Dave’s service to the Town, including his volunteer work and his time as a Councilman.
Everyone that attended our Memorial Day Parade got to see what a wonderful job Laura Sutherland did on the float that she designed and made in honor of Dave Hinkle. They also got to see the tribute that Page Youth Football League (PYFL) gave to Mr Hinkle that was attached to their vehicle. The PYFL also donated a banner to the Shenandoah Town Hall that they had made in honor of Mr. Hinkle.
