The below was written in the Page News & Courier May 1, 1890.
Shenandoah items. The Furnace Co. at Shenandoah is putting up a large engine house at the Gem Furnace at this place, at a cost of about $7,000. The saloons of Shenandoah pay about $600 license taxes to the treasury of that town. Chief of Police Harrison reports the order of Shenandoah first class as good as any new town he ever saw.
The furnace is beating its best record- making more and better iron than ever before. General Manager Fulton has put everything in first-class order, and the premises are as neat as a new pin.
Ten or 12 dwelling houses are in course of erection at Shenandoah, and a number of more to be built during the summer.
All the merchants have large stocks, and are selling more goods than at any time in the past. The professions at Shenandoah are represented by one preacher, two physicians and one dentist.
Shenandoah has seven general stores, carrying the aggregate stock of about $50,000 worth of goods; one drug store, two millinery stores, two groceries, two restaurants, two hotels, one shoe store, three real estate offices, one building association, two planning mills, two corn and feed stores, two meat stores and a number of other small establishments.
Messrs. Dent and Rogers are getting out large quantities of fine ore for the Furnace Co. at their mine near Verbena..
Dwelling houses at Shenandoah rent from $8 to $15 per month, and there is active demand for more.
