Update June 8, 2018

PACA awarded grant to fight Childhood Obesity:

The Town of Shenandoah is so very thankful to be a grant winner in this program! Our old wooden playground was constructed in early 1990 and is in dire need of replacement. Commercial Playground equipment is very expensive with some pieces $50,000 to $100,000 or more!

From the HCAT grant, we will receive $7,007 this grant year, but the first piece of play equipment to be replaced (with shipping) will cost: $11,028 (and this piece of equipment is on sale at a 40% discount too!)

The Town is currently fundraising to help pay the non-grant funded additional prices for the first phase of equipment, surface replacement, and second phase equipment too.

Mamma Mia's has offered to do a proceeds day on Wednesday, June 13th. Anyone who eats at Mamma Mia's next Wednesday AND mentions they are dining to help support the playground replacement, the Town will receive 10% of the proceeds to help pay for the equipment replacement.

The Town is also accepting donations from businesses or individuals of any amount toward this project and it is hoped we will obtain enough to add some adaptive play equipment and some for handicap children, replace all equipment, and surface too using grant funds and donations!

All donors will have their name (or business name) on a banner to be displayed at the park for the first and second phase celebrations!

Thanks again to Bobbi Wells, Megan Gordon and the entire Page Alliance for Community Action Team and of course to the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth HCAT for grant funds to jump start this play equipment replacement in our community!

See attached and below for more information. Please post and pass this notice on to anyone you feel may be interested in helping us have a safer and adaptive/handicap accessible places for children to play in Shenandoah.

Thanks again to everyone.

All

We are happy to announce that PACA has been awarded another two year cycle of the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth HCAT grant to prevent childhood obesity and promote physical fitness. The grant cycle will begin July1, 2018.

Thanks to Bobbi for writing an excellent grant and to our community partners for their continued support and dedication to the youth in Page County.

We will continue our current HCAT efforts by providing free swim lessons and sports registrations for disadvantaged youth. We will also continue to support free runs for middle and elementary aged students in Page County. We have expanded our efforts to include funding for the WigWam playground equipment upgrade in Shenandoah and new Fit Trail equipment for the Greenway in Luray.

Thanks,

Megan Gordon

Page Alliance for Community Action awarded $60,000 grant for Childhood Obesity Prevention

Grants will fund programs to fight obesity on the local level.

LURAY, VA June 7, 2018 Page Alliance for Community Action (PACA) has been awarded a two-year grant of $60,000 from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY) to fund community activities and services to prevent and fight childhood obesity.

VFHY’s Healthy Communities Action Team (HCAT) grants fund local community coalitions across Virginia to fight childhood obesity. Funding and training provided by VFHY through its HCAT grants allow community organizations to implement identified promising practices in childhood-obesity prevention strategies suggested by the national Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The HCATs identify opportunities for policy, systems and environmental changes that promote increased access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity at the local level.

Page Alliance for Community Action HCAT partners with: Page County Public Schools, the local Parks and Recreation Departments, the towns of Luray, Stanley and Shenandoah, the Virginia Cooperative Extension and Page County Public Schools Food Service Department. These partnerships help to coordinate family and community activities that promote physical activity and healthy eating habits. With grant funding from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth HCAT program PACA will offer free swim lessons for disadvantaged youth, free community run registrations for Page County Public School middle and elementary aged students, free recreation league registrations for disadvantaged youth, new playground equipment for the Wig Wam Village in Shenandoah, and new fit trail equipment for the Greenway in Luray.

22 Organizations were awarded Healthy Community Action Team Grants for the 2018-2020 grant cycle. Competition for grant awards takes place on a statewide basis. For more information, visit http://www.vfhy.org/obesity/hcat-initiative

We are replacing some playground equipment at Wig-Wam Village Playground. There are many pieces of the existing wooden equipment that is missing, broken and either needs to be completely repaired or taken out, bees build nests in the wooden structures, wood causes splinters, and it hasn't been replaced since early 1990's.

We received some grant funding from Healthy Communities Action Team, but the equipment is quite expensive, and therefore, we can't replace but one piece of equipment at this time using grant and Town funds. (Here is the first piece of equipment to be installed-because it is on sale at a 40% discount right now.)

It will be primary colors (red, yellow, blue) to match the theme for the rest of the park.

We would also like to try and get some equipment for handicap accessibility too, which also means we have to replace the surface. Additionally, since the park serves 2-12 year olds, so different sections would be geared toward 2-5 year olds specifically. Our dream is to have some train themed equipment for the smaller children, but again, all of the equipment is expensive, especially if we include shade structures and surface too.

Does your business ever make donations toward these type of expenses?

We will be holding a celebration of the new equipment in August or September and would love to include all partners in the announcements, banners on the fences, and attending the events to hold the grand re-opening of the park with all the new equipment.

Thanks in advance for considering. (Please feel free to pass this email along to any other business or individual that you feel may be interested in partnering with us for playground replacement. )
