STAUNTON The Virginia Department of Transportation has posted weight limits on the Route 602 (East Point Road/Maryland Avenue) truss bridge over the South Fork Shenandoah River. The bridge is located near the town of Shenandoah at the Rockingham-Page county line.

A regularly scheduled inspection recently showed that the bridge can no longer carry heavier commercial loads. The structure now limits single-unit vehicles (such as dump trucks or delivery vans) to no more than 27 tons. Combination vehicles such as tractor trailers are limited to 34 tons.

The Route 602 bridge has been in place since 1955, but incorporates trusses that date back to the 1920s. VDOT is developing plans to restore the structure to an unposted condition, and will announce a work schedule when it is available.
