Happy Birthday Shenandoah Newz!!!
Wow, can you believe it"s been one year since we created a Facebook page called Shenandoah Newz!
From the onset we were impressed with how well our fans liked our content. You may be wondering where we get the articles we post. We have several local sources and friends that send us information to be posted. We pick up some ideas from other media sources such as the internet, radio and local newspapers. Being that we live in town, we get a lot of ideas from just driving around town and keeping our eyes open to current activities.
You may be wondering who is Mr. R, Captain Shutterbug, and Scoop. They are some of our most reliable news sources. We really could not survive without their assistance.
In case you are wondering, who designed and built our website, we the Shenandoah Newz volunteers did! We did not pay any professionals to build it, instead, we are learning as we go! During our design stage, we got a lot of guidance and support from Gary Patterson, KGP Associates. Gary owns and operates KGP Associates. Gary is also a volunteer instructor at the Shenandoah Computer Center. We are still learning and testing new things on our site, so excuse us if you see something one day and the next day it's not in the same place.
We built our site using a free content management System called Joomla. There are several local websites built with Joomla, here are just a few of them:
Shenandoah Merchants Association http://www.shopshenandoahva.com
The Shenandoah Grocery http://www.shenandoahgrocery.com
Town of Shenandoah official page http://www.townofshenandoah.com
More local Joomla websites are being designed and will be released real soon.
We built the website for several reasons. Some Facebook announcements and articles got lost over time, or you had to scroll down forever to read the older post. With our new site, we are using dedicated menus to group like type articles.
Until recently Facebook had a space limit on articles of 420 characters, so we had to shorten a lot of our post. That is something we no longer have a problem with this website.
Shenandoah Newz is not a business. So our volunteers have invested their own time gathering, writing and posting the news. They have also provided the funds to pay for web hosting, domain name etc. You can help assist us in defraying the operating cost of the website, by clicking on the Google ads.
You'll want to visit our site every day, as there will always be something new to see. Every day you will find current topics from WHSV-TV 3, and AP news feeds, in addition you will also find the local weather forecast and latest Virginia Lottery numbers.
We have added a new feature called cooking with Kate. Kate is a senior at Page County High School and is planning on attending a culinary arts college in the fall. Every week Kate will be posting a new recipe. We wish Kate the best of luck as she attends culinary arts college, and who knows, we may one day see her on TV!
If you have a suggestion for a news article or new feature, please contact us via Facebook, website, or email us at editor(at)shenandoahnewz.com {replace the (at) with the @ symbol}
Help spread the word and tell all of your friends about Shenandoah Newz!
