So you didn’t win the big jackpot last night. If you live in Virginia, you can feel good about your loss by knowing that a certain percentage of your loss went to the local school systems.

In 2011, $444 million of Lottery proceeds went to localities to be used for educational priorities.

In Fiscal Year 2011, the Virginia Lottery had
sales of more than $1.4 billion. Of this total, the Lottery contributed $444.2 million, or 29.8%, to
public education grades K-12. A record 59.4%
went back to players in the form of prizes, 5.7% went to the retailers who sell Virginia Lottery
tickets, and 5.1% went to operational expenses.
