Your longtime family pet suddenly passes away. Your family is devastated at the loss. You wonder if the cause of death was from natural causes or if foul play was involved. If only you knew how to find out for sure. Next scenario. A farmer owns several hundred heads of cattle. One day he goes out and finds one of them has died. The next day he finds another one dead. At this point he needs to find out what is causing his cattle to die, and to stop it from spreading to the rest of his heard. For both of these cases, the owner can take the animal to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Laboratory Services. For a fee, they can perform a necropsy on the animal to determine the cause of death. (A Necropsy is equivalent to a human autopsy). In the Shenandoah Valley, the nearest Laboratory Services office is at the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services building at 261 Mt. Clinton Pike in Harrisonburg Va Phone: (540) 209-9130.
