A favorite pastime in our community is fishing. One popular location is the pond at Big Gem Park.

The pond contains good amounts of Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Black Crappie, Bluegill and Green Sunfish. All of these species naturally reproduce in the pond. Daily harvest limits of each species is posted on the sign next to the pond. All Largemouth Bass are to be immediately released back into the pond.

The Shenandoah Indians used to stock the pond in the winter with Rainbow Trout but haven't did so in several years.

Anyone over the age of 16 must have a Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Freshwater Fishing License. The license can be obtained online at http://secure01.virginiainteractive.org/horf/

Fishing after dark also requires a special permit from the town.
