This was a very cool job as they would get out of class early and be the last one to arrive in class. They were dedicated young ladies and gentlemen as we had to stand out in the wind, snow rain and ice, as we didn’t have any shelters to go into. At the end of the school year, we would get to go on field trips to Luray Caverns. The job of the safety patrol was to ensure to safety of the students that walked to and from school. Special attention was assisting students in crossing the roads and that they stayed on sidewalks and didn’t run. Back then, student had to either walk to school or get their parents to drive them. School buses did not run down very many town side streets back then, unlike it does now days. Safety Patrols were station in Shenandoah at intersections of: Maryland Avenue at Fourth and Third Streets; Pennsylvania Avenue at Fourth and Third Streets; and Virginia Avenue at Fourth and Third Streets.
We don’t know the exact date but Shenandoah Elementary ended the safety patrol program many years ago. The names were not listed in the year book for these pictures.
