On Monday May 20, 2013 the Shenandoah Pharmacy will close its doors for good. Shenandoah has had a local pharmacy for over 94 years. To Mike Gund & employees, you and your store will be greatly missed by the entire Shenandoah community.
Short history of the Shenandoah Pharmacy:
In 1919 Mr. H.C. Hisey Sr. and his brother W.E. Hisey opened Hisey’s Pharmacy on First street after they had returned home from serving in World War I. Mr. H. C. Hisey Sr. retired October 1, 1962 from the pharmacy after forty three years in the drug business. The Hisey pharmacy was sold to Dr. C.E and Mrs. Jean Bodell. Miss Annie Atwood and Mrs. Frances Comer continued as clerks for the Bodells. Mrs. Bodell was an experienced pharmacist and a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia and was formerly employed as a pharmacist at McKim and Huffman Drug Store in Luray Virginia.
Barrett R. Bryant bought the pharmacy from Mrs. Jean Bodell in the late sixties. He later built a modern drugstore complex in the southern end of town. Mr Bryan served as mayor of Shenandoah for many years as well as being active in all community affairs.
Mike Gund bought the Pharmacy on Third Street in 1997 from Lisa Bryant. Mike moved to Page County a decade earlier, in 1987. He previously worked as a pharmacist at Revco (now CVS) and at Page Memorial Hospital. In a business like this, you invest a lot of personal feelings into it he said. I have to express my appreciation to the community that’s supported me. Their support has helped me start a family, establish a home, and for that, I can’t express how much I appreciate what they’ve done. I’m definitely not leaving here hard-hearted, but it’s hard to say goodbye. From Page News and Courier, May 16th 2013 edition, Shenandoah Pharmacy to close Monday by Rebecca Armstrong
