- * Door to door dry cleaning service.
- * Walkup window at the Tastee Freeze.
- * They were putting a new tar roof on the Shenandoah Elementary School, and the tar smelled really bad, but the student’s sprits were high as summer vacation was only a few days away!
- * The Western Auto store across from the IGA. (Currently Lily of the Valley Independent Church).
- * Walking into the drug store on Front Street and being greeted by owner Barrett Bryant Good Day Neighbor.
- * They used to blow the fire whistle at noon during the week.
- * The Shenandoah Elementary Safety Patrol. They used to roll out a slow traffic sign (elephant) on Third Street at the beginning and end of the school day.
- * The Fire Department, Rescue Squad & VFW all held carnivals, sometimes all three in one summer.
- * The square metal dunking tank at the carnival ground three balls for a quarter.
- * The coin toss at carnivals.. you won the plate or bowl etc. if your coin stayed on the item. Everyone was trying to win the money in the small shot glass.
- * Playing bingo at carnivals under the huge Kyger tent.
- * The big black water tank on Second Street on the hill above the tennis courts.
- * Dusting erasers on the wall behind the Shenandoah Elementary School.
- * Little black kerosene safety lanterns placed at holes while installing a sewer line along Virginia Avenue.
- * Parades came up Front Street made a right on Virginia Avenue and ended at the carnival grounds.
- * Running the 600 yard dash on the sidewalk behind the Shenandoah Elementary School.
- * The Slade Exterminating Service Van with the giant bug on the roof.
- * The town businesses on Front Street displayed American flags by inserting the flag pole in holes in the sidewalks.
- * Ode’s taxi cab service.
- * The town used to string 60 watt Christmas lights from the tops of the telephone poles across Virginia Avenue. Later years they wrapped them * around the poles. They sure were pretty lite up in the snow!
- * The Town Christmas Tree was across from Town Hall on Front Street.
- * Ralph Jones Grocery Store featuring the Richfood brands. Then Doug and Dorothy Maynard ran D &;D Grocery. Afterwards it became Pecks Snack Bar. (Present day Ashier Lodge Building).
- * Nice & western clothing store on Front Street.
- * ARCO Gas Station where Milnes Market used to be at the stop light.
- * James Hilliard Barber shop on Front Street Building burned and he moved to corner of Second and Pennsylvania Avenue. He also sold and repaired bicycles.
- * Stitching Horse Leather Shop on Front Street. (Currently The Shabby Chic-Boutique is in this building)
- * Shenandoah Indians playing baseball at the old Veterans Memorial Stadium on Junior Avenue. The lights would light up the night sky all around, and Red Sullivan voice echoed throughout the town as he announced the games.
- * The Fire Whistle used to be located on top of the Shenandoah Elementary School house.
- * Swimming at Verbena pool.
- * Gays Pond across from Ralph Jone’s Gas Station. (Currently Big Gem Pond).
- * Esso gas station at intersection of Rt 340 and Maryland Avenue. (Currently Shenandoah Rescue Squad)
- * Shenandoah Recreation league was official member of the Little League Organization.
- * The library was located at the Shenandoah Community Center.
- * Driving up at local gas stations and running over the black wire that rang a bell inside the store.
I’s amazing how so many things can change in such a short amount of time. These items occurred in only the last 45 years!
