Shenandoah’s Third Annual First Responders Appreciation Dinner was held Saturday January 20, 2018 at the Christ United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall at 211 Central Avenue in Shenandoah.

Todd McCoy, Chairman of the Community Focus Group of Christ and Fields United Methodist Churches, welcomed all of the first responders to the dinner. Afterwards the Reverend Jonathan J. Lamb gave the blessing. The Town funded the purchase of the food, and it was prepared by church members and served buffet style.

Mayor Clinton Lucas Jr. thanked the first responders and stressed how the job they do is so important to our community. The mayor stated, Were it not for the volunteer responders, it would bankrupt the town to pay for all the services that the volunteers provide. He mentioned that he is also a member of the Volunteer Fire Department. He went on to read consider yourself an angel, from Gods words to us.

Billy Foltz recognized the Shenandoah Volunteer Fire Company’s 2018 Officers and associate members. He also made several service award presentations.

Police Chief Paul Davis announced that 1st Sergeant Bill Wheeler has resigned and that Nick Weaver will be taking his place.

Eugene Shifflett spoke on behalf of the Shenandoah Volunteer Rescue Squad and made a few comments. He stated the Squad is currently looking for more volunteers to include EMT’s, drivers, and associate members.

The evening was topped off with the drawing of many door prizes, donated by local businesses and members of the church, which included gift items and gift cards. Dennis Zimmerman, Christ Administrative Board Chairman, with the assistance of other members, drew the door prizes. Dennis closed the event with remarks of encouragement to those in attendance.

The First Responders Appreciation Dinner is the teamwork of Christ and Fields United Methodist Churches, and the Shenandoah Town Council. It was started three years ago when church members approached the Council about an appreciation dinner. Together they decided that our community needed to thank and show our appreciation to our first responders for all they do for our community. The first dinner was held in the Shenandoah Community Center and the last two have been held in the Christ United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Article and photographs by Amos Thomas.
