Shenandoah held its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Sunday November 9th and was hosted by Mayor Clinton Lucas. The mayor spoke about the history of Veterans Day and went on to describe the history of the buddy poppy. The mayor also mentioned the addition of the new section of the wall. The mayor’s daughter, Monica Brewer sang the National Anthem, and read a short story entitled Airline Captain It was about an airline that was returning home with HR the human remains of a soldier. Monica also sang the song more than a name on a wall by the Statler Brothers. Each veteran that attended the ceremony received a patriotic medallion. Inscribed on the back of the medallion was Thank you veterans Town of Shenandoah. The mayor stated that during a recent council meeting, Mike Uram donated $125 to help defray the cost of the medallions. The total cost of the medallions were $175. Mr Uram was in attendance and the mayor introduced him to the audience and then provided him with a medallion. The mayor and Monica then presented each veteran that attended with a medallion. One of the oldest veterans in attendance was Russell Montgomery. Mr Montgomery found his brick in the wall. It was engraved Russell Montgomery, Tec5 US Army, 1944-1946 WWII. About 70 were in attendance for this ceremony.
