The Town of Shenandoah Public Works team were working on assembling parts for the Challenger Series playground equipment at the Wigwam Village this week...

They were assisted by members from the Page County Sheriff’s Office inmate Work Detail Program. This equipment was purchased with a donation of $20,000 from Linda Breeden in memory of Dave Hinkle.  According to Shenandoah’s Town manager Juanita Roudabush  “Town public works department along with trustees from Page County Sheriff Office saved our citizens over $8,000 by installing it ourselves!”

They are also installing a Super Dome Climber which was purchased with a $3,000 grant from Healthy Communities through Page Alliance for Community Action (PACA).  Since the challenger was on sale, a little of the $20,000 and other donations were used for this dome as well.

We reached out to Juanita on future plans for Wigwam Village.

“We are still fundraising for one more small piece that will fill the corner near the train.   It is for smaller children. We also are fundraising to replace the wood with Trex, handicap ramp (since the newly installed surface is now ADA compliant) and install some metal benches here and there throughout. We hope to install an actual restroom building too, but all depends on funding and/or grants/donations.

Lastly, we would pursue a grant to install some shade structures over the equipment.

Eventually plans include a third tennis court on the hill behind the shelter to allow for tennis tournaments and resurfacing of the existing courts.

It is all big plans, but with the community support (just the same as original playground was built) we have come a long way in a short time to providing a safe place for local children (up to 12 years old) and visitors too.”
